RCA ANT751 - High Performance, Small Size
I live south of Birmingham in the city of Hoover. All of the major networks except ABC lie essentially due north of me at a range of about 8 miles. My ABC 40 affiliate, however, is at about 60 degrees and 27 miles distant. This is a very low powered transmitter of only 22 Kw.The small indoor and window antennas are completely unable to receive this signal with Red Mountain blocking the signal. Making matters worse, I live in a ground floor apartment on the side away from the transmission tower.
To avoid the wrath of the property manager, I decided I had to mount the antenna in a stealthy manner. With 2 u-bolts I was able to mount a 2" diameter piece of PVC pipe to the bottom of the balcony directly over my patio. The PVC was cut to a 12" length and painted brown to match the balcony. I also painted the antenna brown and bolted it to the pipe.
Aiming the antenna at 60 degs meant the signal had to come diagonally all the way through the rectangular building. I crossed my fingers and set the tv to scan. Success! I now have ABC at 80-85%. All other stations are 95-100%. I have installed several more of these antennas for friends and the results have been similar. All stations are received.
There is no better value for the money than the RCA ANT571! I am an Electronic Tech and have worked with antennas for 40 years. This includes a huge array of military communications systems.
To answer a question I keep hearing, the antenna with the "R" suffix is a revised antenna. With the digital transition, all television transmitters above channel 50 were eliminated. Some 90+% of stations are now actually transmitting in UHF (meaning a smaller antenna for you and me). Some stations (<10%) transmit in the Hi-VHF band (ch 7-13). There are the rare stations (~2%) that are on Lo-VHF frequencies. RCA fine tuned this antenna to allow it to receive channels 7-50 only. The result is a slightly smaller antenna.
