Landlords vehicle overheating

My landlords 03 mazda mpv van overheated on her while on her way back home from work. She knew I worked on my own vehicles so she asked if I can take a look at her van. I propped the hood open and smelled burnt coolant the the engine bay. I determined that van's radiator fan was electrical and not mechanically driven fans. I refilled the radiator with coolant. I started the van, turned on the A/C and saw the condensing fan was not turning on it's own. Being way out in the Pacific, the dealer wanted an arm and a leg for the assy so I ordered the assembly(2fans, controller, and shroud) on Ebay. It came in 8days w/free S/H for $112 from the East Coast. Replaced the assy. and it ran fine. It took 2 and a half gallons of coolant to refill the vans system. So far so good. That was in Aug. 2013.
