Pontiac Montano SV6 AWD - Fact & Fiction: Timing Belt -

mY DIRECT EXPERIENCE WITH THE 2005 PONTIAC MONTANO:

Fact: the 2005 Pontiac Montano does not require a timing belt chage at 100,000 miles (it has a timing chain which does not stretch over time) However, if you hear grinding sounds or conduct a visual check and there is metal shavings in the timing cover --change it! Otherwise is is designed to last the life of the engine under " normal use" Warning! that means no NASCAR style driving habits in the van which could cause several things to break.. ("Print this for your teenagers" )

Fiction: Only a dealership service center can change the back plugs or you have to lift the motor in the back.
You dont have to life the motor! If the dealership had to lift motors to perform tune ups it would take twice as long and the service shop would be out of business.
Step 1. Prepare yourself because it is not an easy task however, the secret to making things easier is having the right tools. G2. If you dont own one go to a local parts discount store and buy your self a spark plug socket set up attached to an extension, you can usually find them over in the tools isle, make sure the plug size is correct( typically 5/8" socket). The great parts about this plug socket and extension is that the socket is attached on a swivel and the extension is permanently atatched to the socket! Thats right! Its one piece! no more dropping your socket into the dark abyss behind the engine! Now take the tool home attach it to your rachet, put a blanket across the fender (so you can lay belly down towards the back, make sure you have a flash light off to the side and now pull the plug wire off the one your working on (do this one at a time unless you have a could tape system I have seen people mark the wire with tape #1 # 2 etc and then have oil and grease all over and the tape comes off! Now just slide your one piece plug socket set down onto the plug, go slow and feel it slip over because you wont be able to always see it.

Now put your new plug (check gap ) back into the opening (tip: you can put a lil teflon tape around the nut part of the spark plug if it is loose in the socket.
Good luck !

I am the 2nd owner of a 2005 Pontiac Montano Van SV6 AWD. I purchased it for my wife 4 years ago at the used lot owned by a large dealership. The price tag at 64,000 miles in 2011 was $14,800.00 which includes finance charges and a 4,000 pay off on my trade (2001 F150 180,000 miles). I have conducted all minor and major repairs on this van since ownership.
