Brother MFC-420cn Best Bang for the Buck!

The Brother mfc-420cn was my first all-in-one printer. I always thought all-in-ones were too expensive, especially if I wanted color printing. Luckily I lived near a warehouse that auctioned off pallets of merchandise from Target, Walmart, etc. Winners would throw away duplicates and things they couldn't fit in their trucks. Early one morning in '05, I found 3 mfc-420s in the trash and grabbed them all. When I went to the store I expected the ink to be expensive. Then I found out - not one ink, but four ink cartridges! However, the ink was only $65 (which I thought was a great price), and now I can replace my ink for a small fraction of that price. While looking online, I noticed that the 420cn was not a high-end model. In fact, there were only a couple that were less expensive. I had very low expectations. Since I didn't have the software or the manuals, I went online to Brother-usa.com. The website was excellent. I found the drivers immediately, installed them, and then downloaded the whole manual. First I tried scanning, and then photocopying some pictures. Printing was very fast. When I set the speed to Fine 2400dpi, it was very slow, but the photos turned out excellent. Brother ink always prints better quality, and for longer than my HP and Kodak printers. Once the lcd says "ink low" the printer becomes difficult to deal with. The machine confuses "ink low" with "ink empty." I like to wait until every drop of ink is gone. Just b/c the Cyan ink is low, I shouldn't have any issues with printing in black & white. That's one thing about the MFC-420 I don't like. All the ink cartridges need ink regardless of what color you're printing with. One other silly feature is that it has both USB and Ethernet connections, however, the connections are inside the printer, under the flatbed. If you don't feed the wire perfectly the printer will not close. The flatbed will be stuck ajar. I keep one printer at home, one at the office, and gave one to my in-laws. After 7 years, all 3 MFC-420s still work great. I'd like to have a color laser printer at the office. However, the 420cn connected to our network very easily. Both PCs and Macs can use it simultaneously. It faxes, photocopies, scans our financial records, and even has memory card-reader slots on the front. This printer is a work-horse. It's a great value, and I don't mean "cheap" when I say that.
