Bushnell Weather FXI Reviews

.... April 16th, 2014

A great internet-based weather station that was bricked by Bushnell

I have one of these units that I purchased several years ago and it worked so well that I purchased another one recently on eBay. It displays (or used to anyway) current weather conditions, the day's forecast and the next 3 days' forecast on the main screen, with the ability to see the following 3 days' forecast with the push of one button on the unit. The neatest feature was the color backlit display that changes colors based on the current temperature. Even without my glasses on, I could tell from across the room what the approximate temperature outside was simply by what color the display was. I loved it! Unfortunately, a couple weeks after purchasing the second unit, I noticed that the weather station was no longer receiving updated temperature and forecast information. These units are fed by software you install on your PC, which then transmits the data to the unit via a small USB transmitter connected to your PC. A constant internet connection is required for it to work, and the PC would need to stay on all of the time. I had no problem keeping the PC on all of the time because I use that particular PC as a Windows Media Center DVR (so it needs to stay on in order to record shows, etc.). The software (which wasn't very good to begin with, but it did work) that came with the Bushnell Weather FXi, Golf FXi and Hunt FXi units was fed by Accuweather's forecast data. In March 2014, the data feed agreement between Bushnell and Accuweather abruptly ended with no warning from either party. Their respective websites and Facebook pages are noticeably devoid of any such information as well. Since the forecast data from Accuweather.com is freely available, I place the blame for the units not working anymore on Bushnell. Yes, the software was probably written to use a certain type of feed from Accuweather's website, but software code CAN be modified. The subpar software written by Bushnell was authored in .NET, which is not particularly known for its stability and definitely notorious for its hackability. Given this shortcoming, I had hoped that I would be able to figure out a workaround to continue feeding data to the units. No such luck. Bushnell has a LOT of angry customers who paid a decent amount for this weather station and loved it. Now it's a paperweight. Bushnell products are not inexpensive and by not fixing this product, they are potentially losing lots of sales on their other expensive products from people like me who don't like to buy a product only to see it bricked by its creator a mere few years later. The attribute ratings for 'Durability', 'Cost Effective', 'Operate as Advertised' and 'Customer Service' are less than 5 stars, as is the main rating for one reason: Bushnell stopped supporting this product and has no plans whatsoever to fix it. Any rating given above one star is because the unit DID work at one point and when it did, all of these ratings would have been 5 solid stars, including the overall rating. Bushnell, please fix the software (or write a simple program that can tap into Accuweather's feed). I never actually used the PC software to look at the forecast--only to set it up. Most other users are probably the same, particularly because the software didn't display information very well (many times even on large PC monitors text would overlap). Something that can use a ZIP code to get the information from Accuweather's site to the unit is all we'd like. It's such a shame that they bricked this unit and offer a paltry amount off of a new Bushnell product from their website (like I'd buy something from them after this).
