Dymo LabelManager PnP with a Mac PowerBook

The LabelManager PnP that uses the PC or Mac for the keyboard and display is a great idea but needs a lot of improvement in the presentation and execution.

The information available to a prospective purchaser is very light on, except for colourful but brief marketing bumpf.
Nowhere is the purchaser told if the labeller comes with any label tape of any type or colour.

Useful info: My labeller came with a 3m roll of 12mm black on white label tape in the box. The standard roll that you purchase is 7m in length and various colours are available including clear.

The labeller loads its own 'Lite' software which installs itself via the USB connection on either the PC or Mac. I'm using a Mac.

You get a 'quick start guide' but there is no full user manual available either in the box or anywhere on the web that I can find. Therefore, apart from plugging it in and turning it on, you're on your own in figuring out how it operates and what its clever features might be.

The 'Advanced' software is available as a download and the download works ok. But again, you're on your own as far as making use of it. Do you need to shut down the Lite version to operate with the Advanced one, or can they coexist on the same machine and labeller? They each seem to be able to operate independently and at the same time.

I had a lot of trouble getting my first label to print. Nothing happened on my first few attempts and then eventually a word was printed out but with spacing that was scrunched -together at one end and correct at the other. Most likely the tape tension was not correct, but how do you know? Another time the label printed but the tape bunched up inside the printer and didn't come out of the slot.

I find that the graphics and font on the screen don't correspond very well to the size of the print on the label when it comes out. It seems that the screen representation is pretty well constant across a variety of print sizes but the length of the printing and label that comes out is very much longer what is shown on the screen. Some kind of 1:1 scaling or mapping would be most useful.

My battery never charges past 2 bars out of 3 even though I have left it connected to a full-power USB port for most of the day. Other items including mobile phones charge fine through the same USB port. The little battery icon shows 2 bars and 'connected but not charging'. Why isn't it charging? Don't know. It is certainly connected because data passes from port to printer and vice versa. I have sent off an enquiry to Dymo support.

That's just my experience after a fairly frustrating day of use. I have printed some labels and made lots of mistakes. Maybe I'll learn as I go and work around the problems found, but I was expecting that a good product from a reputable manufacturer would have worked out all of these things and wouldn't need me to tell them that there's a lot of scope for things to not go well.
