Haier ESA3185 Reviews
Short life unit ( two and a half years used)
Although the ESA3185 was a bargain at $470 at the local Wal Mart, I was hoping that it would last as long as my Kenmore 1800 BTU unit did (25 years). Since it claimed to be energy effecient that was the main reason I bought it.It was HEAVY! I installed it myself and modified the window frame to accept it as the width of the unit and the width of the window left only 1.5 inches on either side and the included curtains required a minimum if 2 inches clearance to be installed. So much for easy installation. I had the 220 volt outlet available so power was okay. When I first turned it on it was quiet and effecient, cooled quickly and ran like it should. After several months use I began to notice that it started to get louder and at night would even wake me up when it came on in energy saver mode. Then I began to notice the temperature setting errors: when you set it to 73 degrees it would not come on until it was 80 degrees in the room. When you set it on 72 degrees, it wouldn't turn off untill it hit 68 degrees. When it did turn off it always showed 68 degrees on the readout and would not turn back on untill the outside tenmperature exceeded 80 degrees. And lets not forget the remote. AH yes that pain in the A$$ remote, whose battery life can literally be counted in days (@90 - whether you use it or not, the battery would be weak enough to not allow the remote to operate) and had to be replaced. Then there was the remotes receiver on the AC itself. I could be using any remote for any other appliance anywhere in the house and the unit would react by turning off or changing speed or modes. Very annoying!
Two months after thne hottest temps in South Carolina started I noticed that the unit began to sound noisier than usual in High Speed mode and that the Mediom and Low speeds were the same speed. Then on the morning of July 23 during a heavy rainstorm at 3:20 AM, I was awakened by a loud banging noise from the unit . I quickly turned it off and waited for the rain to slow down. When I turned on the unit it appeared to be running but when I awoke at 6:30 AM, the inside temperature was at 83 degrees. I pulled the unit and found that the condenser fan blades had sheared off their hub on the motor shaft. I could clearly see the blades were warped which explained the excessive noise in High mode. Since no repair businesses were open at that hour and it was supposed to be getting into the triple digit temps that weekend and that it would take several days for me to get replacement parts I opted to get a new unit and repair this one later.
