Electrical problem which burned my arm. Sparks flying!!

I have had this iron for a few years and it has performed adequately. However, the other day I was ironing and all of a sudden I had sparks flying out from the area where the wire enters the plasic housing for the iron. The sparks were quite intense and burned my arm before I could safely put the iron down. I quickly pulled the plug out from the wall and took the iron out of service for good. Upon checking the manufacturers label I discovered that this iron is MADE IN CHINA. Why can't US manufacturers sell products made in our country. I think we would have better quality.
