Takes too long to toast

I bought this toaster despite reading the one poor review, but I'm taking it back today. It took almost 3 minutes to toast an English muffin and 2 minutes to toast a thin bagel on bagel setting, and even then it wasn't toasted well. Also, the cancel button lights up as soon as you push the lever down to toast. What's up with that?

Toasting

Slots are wide enough for bagels, but too wide to bread slices resulting in longer toasting times and inner side not as toasted as outsides.
