No batteries found on wallplate

Model looks just like picture, but when I removed faceplate from wall, there was no batteries to be found. There was about 5 or 6 wires that were screwed onto plate at various places. I guess I have to replace the thermostat now. I am no electrician. It was a surprise to me.
