Asus U6E Reviews

.... September 9th, 2013

ASUS U65E LAP TOP, two years in.

Before I bought the ASUS U65E I took the time to read reviews and compare with other models...I can confirm that the criticisms widely reported at that time (Fall of 2011) (Horrible speakers, low volume output from audio jack, Video is onboard / not upgradable, wireless board hard to access) are all true.

I've used the machine very heavily...as in 15 to 20 hours per day for two years, sometimes for 30 hours straight. I've used the machine primarily for working on websites, checking email, youtube videos, social networking, word processing, and some fairly heavy photoshop work.

The day I took it home one keycap fell off in my hand and within a year 50% of the letters were worn off the keys..you may want to figure on getting an external keyboard if you use it anywhere near the way I do.

One year in I started using dual monitors (the laptop screen and an external flatscreen.)

In the past six months I upped the ante a bit, in terms of video and cpu demand on the machine with some online, then local gaming. First it was Minetest (an open source version of Minecraft) the 4GB ram started pegging and disk swapping became vigorous, but it was playable...

Then came the Elder scrolls -- Skyrim obsession for a couple weeks (its local only) ..Terrible lag...(lmao had to play as an always over-encumbered, sneaking archer with a non-gung-ho follower to ignore the slow display and abysmal command responsiveness) suddenly the machine started heating up (with fans operational, sitting on a cooled desk platform), suddenly a nasty buzz (louder than any sound that ever emanated from the machine prior LOL), both screens dissolved, and blam black screen. Board lights light, fan rotates, but no screen or hidden prompts, no cmos interaction, and strangely, no audible post codes.

So, for purposes of the review, I'm gonna say--'not recommended for gaming'. I'm guessing that the PSU (or something else on the MB) is just not up to par with what the machine tries to do when so commanded?

I have to say that up until this point I really felt blessed by this machine, so forewarned being forearmed yo can get a lot of value out of the notebook, just don't count on it to save itself from asking it to work too hard.

Turns out the Power Supply Unit is also on board. I've looked here and elsewhere for possible PSU upgrade options...looks like some folks think it's possible but neither the factory nor the service center I contacted are willing to offer an option there.

Likewise, no newer mother boards are being offered as compatible upgrades with the chassis. So at this point if you buy a used one don't overpay and do all you can to watch the power consumption. If I get this one fixed I will post back on how that turns out.
