Worked good for a while, then wouldn't recognize DVDs

Bought this device about 4 years ago. Worked good in the beginning, however it was mostly used for watching rented DVDs, and the occasional VHS tape till they all but disappeared. Recently (1 year ago) I decided I would like to back up shows off my cable co DVR and found out that it should be possible on this device. However it since has not been able to recognize disks, tried many brands and all types of supposedly compatible types, no luck. Then noticed it would not even read Commercial DVDs anymore, just says loading. I would be careful buying this device used as I have read from other users that over time the drives give out. Furthermore I am disappointed in the manuals and Samsung's lack of posting part numbers and making known wear parts not easy to identify and replace. Not everyone wants to buy a new whatever every couple years, and since this type of device is being ran out of the US market place it makes this even more frustrating. So in a nut shell, was nice while it worked.
