Toshiba W105-L251 Reviews

Wonderful Concept, could still use some refining...

I recently bought one of these upon finding out this was a dualscreen device that ran the regular Windows OS and the reviews from videos displayed it working well. I did know there was a complaint about the noise from the fan, but didn't know what to expect in reality.

After much looking around, I fanally found one and got it.

Here is what I know:
There are essentially (3) three builds of this device. The difference is within the hardware built in it.

W105: This is the model released in the USA, it has only bluethooth and Wifi support.

W100?: The ? is to note a letter that I understand pertains to different countries/regions it was distributed.
This model has three builds.
One being exactly like the one distributed in the USA - Canada had this one.
Another that can be found in Europe & Asia that has 3G capability in addition to what is on the W105 model.
Lastly, the Japanese edition specificly is the only one that has bluetooth, Wifi, 3G AND WiMAX.
WiMAX is in short like wifi, that it comunicates within wireless networks. It differs by the acceptances of a larger range of signals than a wifi capatible device.

My experience:
I have owned the device for about a month, it is running on Win 7 Home Prem. Ed. and it workes very well. The haptic feedback from the virtual keyboard is great while typing. There happens to be a little radar that live updates me on nearby wifi networks and the one I am connected to. Using it as a reader for my pdf files in book form is quite lovely and easy to use. Its a great multitasker in that I can have one application running on each screen at the same time - say I watching a movie/play a game and there is something I want to lookup, I just use the other screen to do so while still enjoying the movie/game. After tweeking the setting for the camera a little, it has the capability of doing very well with video chatting or just taking pictures. The softeware that comes with it is quite useful from finding documents last worked on to updates on status of the comunications of the device. The resolution on both the touch screens is really clear and the fact that they are both capacitive is quite nice. Did I say both screens have haptic feedback? Its small and although its not a featherweight there is still a nice feel to it.
My downsides to this device is the lack of ports to transfer media - there is only one USB port and its not a 3.0. Yes there is a micro SD card slot and runs media great of of it, but it would have been better if it was an SD slot instead. The sound is pretty weak from the internal speaker, and the fan for the cooling noise can be very loud and annoying. Upon opening it I saw that part of the reason the fan sounded so bad was because it was resonating with the exterior casing. There wasn't anything to stop it from coming in contact with the fan, so I say this was a failt in design. Using this in a quiet place is not advised, anywhere else - you might want to invest in a headphones. The SSD is small - 62GB, and can be filled quickly once you've installed your software. The battery life leaves much to desire. And because the screens are capacitive, it would be nice if there was a pen that was actually compatible with it. Then again that could be just the abscence of pen drivers on it.

Word of caution, this was a limited edition device and released as a prof of concept - there is not much service for it and you are likely to get a hard time trying to get it serviced by Toshiba.

In all dispite the drawbacks, I really like this device, and I hope there is a better one coming into works in the near future that addresses the faults in this one. This sort of device is a great fit for my on the go lifestyle and I would greatly welcome improvments that would alow pen support as I do like drawing and design quite a bit. I did not buy this at the intial price point so for the amount I spent on it, I feel it is really nice for something that could potentialy be quite the beast if upgradeable. This is a great little device to own.
