defective battery and wont stay open on its own

i purchased this 9/25/10 as a christmas gift for 82 & 89 year old parent who lose power often where they live. they charged it when received on christmas but didnt use it. they charged it again a few months later and found that once unplugged from the wall "low battery" light would come on immediately and unit kept falling shut as hinge not working properly. but as they are elderly they just put it aside and i was not told. a week ago we were told a heavy ice/wet snow storm was headed our way so i charged unit 4-5 hours until light went out. when our power went out i got dvd player for Mom and put a movie in. it immediately flashed low battery again. i called RCA and spoke to david in c/s i was told it is 1 month over their warranty date and i need to pay $45 plus ship unit to them for replacement battery. i paid 169 already plus tax now they want another $45? just because it is 1 month over a warranty? dont buy this, too expensive for manufacturer defects like i have experienced. buy a cheaper one from another manufacturer!
