Sony KDL-40EX700 Reviews
Sony tv
This 40" tv is very good. High picture quality & superb sound. Good quality and works perfect.I have a KDL-40XBR5 purchased in Dec. 2008 (manufactured in May 2008), and about 6 months ago, problems began that have become increasingly worse. They started with some picture problems when the TV was first turned on in the morning; now, it takes 1-2 hours to "warm-up, and the resulting picture is virtually unwatchable. Everything from no picture (just black...not even the input "HDMI _" shows up) to red/orange vertical lines to cloudy ghosting images constitute this problem.
Like many, I found out this problem was diagnosed on the 46" XBR4 and XBR5 sets, and that Sony extended the manufacturer's warranty on these. However, I've come across many posts on the internet that delineate problems with both 52" and 40" models.
After having a Sony authorized repair service officially diagnose the problem ($133 including tax in the Philadelphia area), they confirmed the issue. Sony offered me a KDL-40EX500 for $450 (a $315 discount from the current online sale price) and $1,175 for a 46NX810 (a $625 discount from the current online sale price).
Of course, this is totally dissatisfying to anyone who routinely buys at the high end of the product line. Not only is it offensive to think that I would buy a product from them less than 2.5 years after buying a top of the line product due to defect in the panel, it's also frustrating because they have already clearly admitted this problem exists in the panels for the 46" models!
FYI, the panels are all Samsung panels made in Korea. The XBR5 models are all the same specs -- just different sizes of panels.
I asked Sony Customer Relations for the address for the Sony Law Department (it's in San Diego), and I'm currently drafting a letter to pursue this with them.
